Patchwork Primers Volumes are set up with 6 units lasting 6 weeks each. Lesson plans cover a week at a time. At the beginning of each week is a checklist of topics that will be covered, items to prepare in advance, and other items that will be needed that week. There is also a short section of background information that includes the history highlights for that week.
Lessons are grouped according to subject for each week. All the history lessons are together, then science, the language, etc. This way you see the big picture of how today's lesson is leading into tomorrow's lesson.
Please note that lesson descriptions are brief and allow you the freedom to pursue them in a way that works best for your students at their level. The lesson for history on a given day may just state to study a particular person. It's up to you how you choose to study the topic. You may want to read a biography about them, or a fictionalized living book, do an online search, use a history spine, just cover the information included in the background information, or use an encyclopedia.
Every single topic covered in Volume 1 or 2 can be found in an encyclopedia. For instance, World Book encylopedia has an entire 26 pages devoted entirely to "Colonial Life in America". It has history, government, houses, clothing, furnishing, religion, schools, and much more, as well as colorful pictures and photos. It has more than enough information to cover the subject in depth.
