"Having been a faithful unit studies person since I began homeschooling, I am always interested in the new products that have come out since I started 12+ years ago. I was SO pleased to take a look at the Patchwork Primers program. Although the volumes are designed for primary grades, they can easily be adapted for both
younger and older children.
BUT, here is the thing that I think separates Patchwork Primers from other unit study programs, it has a VERY detailed scope and sequence for each term. The scope is broken down by each subject, including
history, science (i.e. anatomy, physics, biology, etc.) history, music, nutrition, grammar, spelling, math, Bible, literature, etc. It is so DIVERSE and thorough. When you start seeing things like
"genre study: descriptive writing, poetry, script writing, fiction writing techniques, books vs. movies and internet publishing", you KNOW you have got quite a program!
Each week a list includes supplies you will need and additional things you will want to research. You are prepared and empowered to do a terrific job of teaching each subject with a minimal amount of work outside the program. Ms. Wilharm has even taken the time to remind you to prepare math drills, etc. You are focused on a topic for 6 weeks.
Where you are going and what you are doing is always crystal clear. The lesson plans for each week are broken down by subject and "Day".
Tests are included as well as drills for math. What a blessing to not have to make up these materials! There is even a way for the kids to
earn "badges" for work done. What a neat way to make what they learn VERY practical.
When my children were 1-3rd grades (even older) I could have really used this program. The time spent not making up tests or writing lesson plans can be used playing with your children or reading about a topic with them. I highly recommend this program to those of you with elementary aged children. It can really make unit studies simple and thorough."
